Thanksgiving is a Family Day for San Francisco
Here are some of our biggest attractions and museums open on Thanksgiving in San Francisco.
Aquarium of the Bay:
The Aquarium of the Bay on SF's Pier 39 is open on Thanksgiving Day. The aquarium is focused on local aquatic animals from the San Francisco Bay and neighboring rivers and watersheds as far as the Sierra Mountains.
All day long, you can watch their playful jellyfish swim around their tanks, walk through the tunnels within the aquarium or touch a starfish. It's one of the best family-friendly options this holiday.
Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge came to be recognized as a symbol of the power and progress of the United States, and it set a precedent for suspension-bridge design around the world. Make sure to stop by the Welcome Center for a few souvenirs.
Japanese Tea Garden:
The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, California, is a popular feature of Golden Gate Park, originally built as part of a sprawling World's Fair, the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. A visit to the Japanese Tea House and Garden creates an intense awakening of the senses with the sounds of an azalea-covered waterfall, the sights of regal lanterns and statues, and the intoxicating scent of sweet wisteria and other magical blooms.
MUIR WOODS
Home to one of the world's last remaining coastal redwood forests, Muir Woods National Monument allows travelers to hike, relax, or picnic among giant Northern California trees only minutes from the city. This protected nature reserve is also part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, home to Stinson Beach. It’s known for its towering old-growth redwood trees. Trails wind among the trees to Cathedral Grove and Bohemian Grove, and along Redwood Creek.
Twin Peaks
A grassy 64-acre hilltop park is a popular attraction, with its hiking trails leading up to wind-swept peaks and 360-degree views of the Bay Area. A twenty-minute ride from downtown, this is the best place to catch a San Francisco sunrise. Twin Peaks San Francisco is accessible for everyone, whether you hike up, drive up, or climb further up from the parking lot.
California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences is a research institute and natural history museum in San Francisco, California, that is among the largest museums of natural history in the world, housing over 46 million specimens. You can say hello to Claude, the rare white alligator, walk through the 4-story Osher Rainforest or visit the Steinhart Aquarium.
